Project Brief

Howgill Beck is a small river that was straightened more than 200 years ago, causing it to lose many of the natural features that benefit both wildlife and the landscape. In an ambitious project a 1.8km stretch of the river was returned to a more natural state, by the creation of natural meanders and re-connecting the watercourse to its floodplain.
Now the river’s “wiggles” have been restored, the flow of the water has slowed, which has allowed gravel beds to form. These habitats are really important for fish and invertebrates, which in turn provide food for birds and other wildlife.
During periods of high rainfall, river water can now spill out onto the surrounding floodplain meadows, helping to reduce the chance of flooding downstream and providing vital pools and damp patches for wading birds, like Lapwings and Redshanks, to feed on.

Project brief

River Goldrill, at Side Farm, Patterdale. Assisted river restoration – National Trust

Following consultation with the client, a range of tailored approaches were agreed for four key areas across the farm, including: the Ullswater fan area, the tributaries near the main buildings at Side Farm, the right valley side below Beckstones, and the left valley bottom at Deepdale.

The works carried out included: pond excavation, track raising and pipe installation, revetment removal, creation of talus micro-features, excavation of a new cut channel and chutes, breach excavation, further revetment removal, and ditch infilling.

Contractors who go above and beyond are priceless.

We have worked with Tom Lindsay on a few projects now, with the current nearing completion. This will see us complete restoration works on more of Goldrill Beck in Ullswater. Huge embankments have been erased from the floodplain and I’m excited to see how this reach looks after a few big storms.

It’s not just the quality of the work, but the extra effort which makes a contractor stand out. Tom and his team go to great lengths, not only to work with us, but to work with our farm tenants. On this project they have repaired a sewer pipe, made time to chat and checked our tenant is happy with their work.

This effort, which some would see as unpaid time, not only builds their reputation, but also ours as a project and he led to us refining our procurement process to ensure we are scoring tenders on the things which really make a difference.

Rebecca Powell - Project Manager National Trust

‘’I’ve worked with Tom and his team for the last 5 years in my role as a Project Officer, delivering flood
risk and habitat improvement projects. Tom has carried out projects including a sensitive fish easement, a large-scale gully stabilisation project, pond creation/restoration and hedge creation. Many of these projects were complex, sensitive in river works, where his team worked to tight deadlines, dealing with any on-site issues professionally and keeping in regular communication with myself during the works. Tom is diligent in providing the necessary paperwork as required. He is willing to take on feedback and is
great working directly with the landowners and farmers. Tom has continued to expand his range of
environmental services which allows us to deliver more grant funded environmental projects.
We certainly intend to ask Tom to work with us again in future’'

Clair Payne – West Cumbria Rivers Trust

Natural Flood Management project for National Trust Riverlands on our Dunthwaite estate.

‘’Jack led the team delivering a Natural Flood Management project for National Trust
Riverlands on our Dunthwaite estate. The project delivered nineteen new ponds to slow the
flow across the estate as well as associated ditch blocking and scrapes on a challenging site.
Throughout the project Jack communicated well with myself and rest of the project team,
giving regular updates and taking the time to walk sections of the site under construction and
discuss any issues that arose, helping to minimise disruption to the work program. Jack
developed and maintained a great working relationship with our farm tenant throughout the
project, this was invaluable to us as a project team as it led to a broadening of the scope of the
project and allowing us to deliver more than was originally envisioned. The type of ground at
Dunthwaite could have led to the site easily becoming damaged but Jack and the team
managed this well. During a particularly heavy rainfall event he made the call to cease works
across the site rather than continue on, showing a level of care that has encouraged us to
employ the team again on other sites.’’

This letter provides a reference for TM Lindsay Ltd in relation to their role as the main Contractor (working under ourselves as the Principal Contractor) for the Riverbank Sewer Repair on the River Petteril, Melbourne Park, Carlisle completed in Summer/Autumn 2024. TM Lindsay Ltd worked onsite during the construction contract for 10 weeks, and also provided input into the construction method statement and construction phase plan as part of Health and Safety and CDM 2015 documentation.

During their time on site TM Lindsay demonstrated that they are a well organised company withgood health and safety awareness, especially in the context of working within a publicly accessiblelocation. They also showed their competence and experience with working on aquatic projects of this type, proficiency with large machinery, excellent communication with and management of other sub-contractors and ability to deal with public interaction.

The project was Site Supervised by Tom Lindsay who provided excellent reporting andcommunication throughout the project and showed experience and commitment to delivering a high quality finish to the project. Tom also provided great trouble shooting and problem solving initiatives throughout the project, which meant we completed on programme and within budget.

I would not hesitate to recommend and employ TM Lindsay to undertake riverine and wetland type works in the future.
