Holmewood Forestry Restoration - National Trust

Phytophthora Ramorum Response & Path Restoration – Holmewood and Surrounding Woodlands
Delivered on behalf of the National Trust

In January 2023, we commenced forestry operations at Holmewood and the surrounding woodlands to assist in the containment of Phytophthora Ramorum, a tree disease affecting larch and other species. As the appointed contractor, our team undertook a comprehensive programme of tree felling, environmental protection, and access restoration on behalf of the National Trust.

Key Works Undertaken:

Weekly silt mitigation measures throughout the felling phase, including the installation of silt netting and excavation of silt ponds, helping to minimise sediment runoff into nearby watercourses.

Upon completion of timber extraction, we imported over 400 tonnes of locally sourced stone to carry out repairs to ancient bridleways and woodland paths that were affected during operations.

To further protect water quality around the lake, additional culverts were installed to manage surface water effectively.

All stone was graded and rolled, ensuring safe and durable access routes for replanting teams and future land management activities.

Soil embankments were reseeded to stabilise disturbed areas and promote rapid vegetation recovery.

Following the completion of restoration works, the bridleways and paths were reopened to the public, offering visitors access to an improved and healthier woodland environment. These efforts have supported both disease management and habitat enhancement, laying the groundwork for long-term woodland regeneration.
