Delivered on behalf of West Cumbria Rivers Trust
Part of Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme
As appointed contractor, we supported West Cumbria Rivers Trust in delivering targeted restoration works on the River Irt at Black Wood, a National Trust site. The project aimed to restore natural hydrological processes and improve habitat conditions for priority species.
Removal of 70m of cobble revetment, with materials reused in-channel to create habitat features and rapids.
Reconnection of a paleo-channel to reinstate natural flow pathways.
Installation of large woody debris (LWD) to diversify flows and enhance aquatic habitat.
All works undertaken under a Flood Risk Activity Permit issued by the Environment Agency.
Due to the dense woodland setting, works were carefully delivered using specialist excavators fitted with environmentally safe bio-oil, ensuring minimal disturbance within this sensitive environment.
This project supports species recovery while restoring natural river function within one of Cumbria’s most valued landscapes.
