River Irt, Assisted River Restoration, Wasdale

River Irt Restoration – Black Wood, Lake District
Delivered on behalf of West Cumbria Rivers Trust as part of Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme

As the appointed contractor, we are pleased to support West Cumbria Rivers Trust (WCRT) in delivering targeted river restoration works as part of Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme. The project focuses on re-naturalising a section of the River Irt running through Black Wood, a site owned by the National Trust.

The works aim to restore the natural hydrological and ecological function of the river, improving habitat conditions for key species and enhancing riverine biodiversity.

Key Works Undertaken:

  • Removal of approximately 70 metres of existing cobble revetment, with materials strategically repositioned within the channel to form in-stream habitat features and rapids

  • Reconnection of a paleo-channel to reinstate natural flow pathways

  • Installation of large woody debris (LWD) to diversify flow and provide cover and habitat for aquatic species

All works were undertaken under the appropriate Flood Risk Activity Permit, issued by the Environment Agency, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Due to the dense woodland setting, it was determined that the operation could not be safely or effectively carried out from the bank top. Our specialist excavators, fitted with environmentally safe bio-oil, were deployed directly within the working area. These machines are regularly used in sensitive and ecologically valuable environments, ensuring minimal disturbance during operations.

We are proud to apply our expertise in river restoration and sensitive habitat work to this important project, helping to support the recovery of priority species and restore natural processes in one of Cumbria’s treasured landscapes.
