Howgill Beck Habitat Enhancement – Contractor Works
Winner of the prestigious UK River Prize (Project-Scale Award) 2025 by the River Restoration Centre.
We were commissioned to deliver a 4-week enhancement project on Howgill Beck, originating on Cold Fell and flowing through Bruithwaite Forest. The project focused on strengthening hydrological function and increasing biodiversity through targeted habitat improvements.
Creation of off-line wetland features including scrapes, ponds, and ditch blocks to slow runoff, reduce downstream flood risk, and expand wetland habitat.
Excavation of inset berms to widen sections of channel, restore natural meanders, reconnect a low floodplain, and improve habitat diversity.
Installation of boulder rapids using site-won stone to regulate flows, increase oxygenation, and promote gravel deposition for aquatic species.
Implementation of adder protection measures, adhering to designated access routes to avoid disturbance, while creating a mosaic of habitats to support long-term ecological resilience.
The project has delivered measurable improvements to channel function, floodplain connectivity, and habitat diversity, with lasting benefits for wildlife and the wider ecosystem.
