Area: Approx. 62 ha
We successfully delivered peatland restoration works across the Upper Duddon site, covering the Moasdale and Hard Knott Fell areas. The project aimed to restore degraded upland peatland habitats, improve hydrological function, and enhance the ecological condition of the site in line with National Trust and Cumbria Wildlife Trust specifications.
Access to the site was achieved via the ford north of Cockley Beck Bridge (NY24637 01690), using existing quad tracks across open moorland. Given the challenging terrain and altitude range, careful planning was required to establish safe and efficient access routes for machinery and materials. Works on the Hard Knott Fell section were prioritised early in the contract due to their more exposed conditions and logistical complexity.
The project included a range of peatland restoration techniques to address extensive erosion features and reinstate natural hydrology. Key activities included:
Hag and gully reprofiling (approx. 1,783 m total)
Grip blocking using peat dams and bunds
Construction of peat, timber, and combination dams (approx. 144 total)
Peat pipe blocking and reinstatement of sink holes
Creation of arc bunds on flatter peat areas (approx. 2,630 m)
All works were carried out using low-ground-pressure machinery and in accordance with best practice guidance for peatland restoration on designated upland sites.
The site presented significant challenges including steep terrain, deep wet peat, variable weather conditions, and proximity to public access routes. Comprehensive risk assessments and daily checks ensured safe working practices throughout.
The restoration works were completed to a high standard, achieving the intended hydrological and ecological improvements across both Moasdale and Hard Knott Fell. The project demonstrated our capability to plan and deliver complex upland peatland restoration under challenging environmental conditions while maintaining strong communication with site managers and stakeholders.
