Project brief
Delivered on behalf of the National Trust
As appointed contractor, we supported the National Trust in delivering an assisted river restoration project on the River Goldrill at Side Farm, forming part of a wider programme to restore natural hydrological processes across the Ullswater fan area.
Works were undertaken across key areas of the farm, including tributaries near the main buildings, valley sides below Beckstones, Deepdale valley bottom, and surrounding low-lying zones.
Excavation of new ponds to create wetland habitat and improve water retention.
Track raising and pipe installation to manage flows and maintain access.
Revetment removal to enable natural riverbank evolution.
Creation of breach features and a new cut channel to restore dynamic flow pathways.
Formation of talus micro-features and chutes to replicate natural fluvial processes.
Ditch infill to slow water movement and reconnect the floodplain.
These nature-based interventions enhance biodiversity, reduce flood risk, and support long-term river resilience within the Ullswater catchment.
