Whietoak Moss Pealtand Restoration Works, Loweswater

Project brief
Whietoak Moss Pealtand Restoration Works,Loweswater

As the appointed contractor, we successfully delivered the second phase of peatland restoration at Whiteoak Moss, covering an area of approximately 33 hectares. The scope of works included reprofiling of eroded peat features and the installation of a range of hydrological interventions such as peat dams and sediment traps.

On flatter ground, both above and below reprofiled hags, small, shallow arc bunds were constructed to retain surface water and prevent further peat desiccation and cracking. In areas of deep, drying peat, collapsing and damming of peat pipes were undertaken to aid rewetting and promote sphagnum re-colonisation, contributing to the long-term ecological resilience of the site.

Key Works Undertaken:

A range of erosion features were addressed across the site. The works completed included:

  • Installation of peat dams
  • Construction of sediment traps
  • Reprofiling of hags and gullies
  • Creation of arc bunds
  • Blocking and stabilisation of peat pipes

These estimates formed the basis of the contract, and all required interventions within these categories were completed to specification and in accordance with best practice for peatland restoration.
